GALVANIC ANODE SYSTEMS FOR STEEL REINFORCEMENT PROTECTION

Although steel reinforcement is protected both physically and chemically by the encasing concrete, it can suffer from corrosion in the presence of chlorides or by way of carbonation of the concrete. Zinc sacrificial anodes have been developed for the protection of steel reinforced concrete and have been in use since the mid to late 1990’s. The earliest types were inserted in patch repairs to steel reinforced concrete structural elements suffering from corrosion in order to prevent incipient anode formation (ring effect) around the repairs. Later, a new design was utilised as discreet anodes embedded in a grid formation for the purpose of prolonging the life of the structural element. A further design utilised longer galvanic anodes for specific applications capable of a better current distribution. All types of anodes have been monitored with time. The knowledge gained from the results has enabled a better understanding of corrosion control and protection parameters and the development of new, more intelligent systems that widens the scope of galvanic cathodic protection.
